Protective DNS for marina offices, fuel docks and berth-holder WiFi

A marina runs a booking office, fuel-dock card terminals, CCTV and gate systems, and WiFi for berth holders and visiting crews, often with a small team. Shield answers each DNS lookup and blocks phishing, malware and command-and-control callbacks before a connection starts. Payment and office networks get threat-first rules, berth holders get family-safe WiFi without ads, and nothing needs installing on their devices.

What is at stake

A small team with a lot of networks

  • Fuel-dock card payments

Payment terminals on the fuel dock and in the chandlery take cards all season. They need to sit apart from berth-holder WiFi, on threat-first rules.
  • Phishing at the marina office

Berthing requests, invoices and changed bank details arrive by email all year. One convincing lure can hand over the booking system.
  • Visiting crews, unknown devices

Each visiting yacht brings phones and laptops you have never seen, on the same WiFi as long-term berth holders.

How Shield fits

Rules for the office, the dock and the pontoons

  • Berth-holder WiFiFamily-safe categories, Safe Search and ad blocking, so pages load faster over a shared link.
  • Visiting crewsTheir own SSID and policy, with a branded block page and nothing to install on their devices.
  • Fuel dock and chandleryPayment terminals and ePOS on their own VLAN, with threat defence first to help you meet PCI DSS.
  • Office and dock staffThreat defence and new-domain blocking on the office network, with a relay so each laptop shows its own IP.

FAQ

Questions we hear from teams like yours

Do we need hardware out on the pontoons?

No. Point your router, firewall or DHCP at Shield and the marina network is covered, from the office to the furthest pontoon. There is no appliance to fit and nothing to install on berth holders' devices.

Can berth holders and visiting crews have different rules?

Yes. Each SSID or VLAN carries its own policy, so berth holders, visitors, staff and payment systems each get the rules that suit them. Policies can also change by time of day and day of week.

Will it slow the WiFi on a busy summer weekend?

No. Blocking ads and trackers removes traffic, so pages load up to 500% faster and use up to 44% less data, in Purple's own measurements. That matters most when a full marina shares one link.

How does it help with PCI DSS on the fuel dock?

Shield helps you meet it. Card terminals sit on their own VLAN with threat-first rules, malicious lookups are blocked before they connect, and scheduled PDF reports give you evidence of the control for your assessor.

What if Shield goes down?

It runs on a dual anycast DNS network, so if one node or network fails the next one answers, and it fails closed, so an outage never leaves berth-holder or payment networks unfiltered. It sits behind your firewall as an extra layer, not in place of it.
